The seat is the one thing that lets it down, and it lets it down hard. An economy return between Heathrow and Dubai on the A380, booked through an agent after a previous trip used Avios points to reach Premium Economy. This time, full economy, no upgrade — a straight test of value against British Airways. ## The Verdict Emirates wins on almost every axis that matters for a long-haul economy flight: the entertainment library is genuinely best-in-class, service is faultless, the A380 never feels cramped, food punches above the cabin class, and the price is on par with BA. The one weak link is the seat itself — firm and unforgiving over seven hours, and scored accordingly rather than averaged away against the space around it. It's enormous, doesn't feel cramped even on a full economy load, and cabin-pressure discomfort is noticeably lower than the norm. The aircraft contributes more to this flight than the cabin class does. - **Seat & Space** — 4/10 — The whole package, bar the seat, and this is the seat. It looked spacious and proved surprisingly firm: seven hours on what felt like a concrete block. Merging comfort and legroom into one row would flatter it, so we haven't — the A380's roominess is scored above, on the cabin, where it belongs. On a full A380 that doesn't happen by accident. - **Service** — 9/10 — Attentive at every stage — check-in, cabin crew and arrival all faultless. The gap is the absence of any menu for buying extra snacks between the set services. - **Entertainment & Connectivity** — 8/10 — ICE is genuinely one of the best systems in the industry regardless of cabin, with a large library of film, TV, music and games. Book the daytime flight — an overnight departure sounds appealing for sleep, but between cabin noise and that seat, sleep doesn't come easily, and a day spent working through the film library is the far more bearable option. ## The Good - The ICE entertainment system stands out regardless of seat class — a genuinely large library of film, TV, music, and games. - The A380 itself is enormous and doesn't feel cramped, with notably low cabin pressure discomfort. - Staff were attentive throughout — check-in, cabin crew, and arrival all faultless. - Pricing was on par with, or slightly under, British Airways economy for the same route. - Emirates' scale at Dubai Airport secures the best arrival gates and terminals. - Food was decent quality — plates cleared, no complaints on taste. ## The Bad - Seats looked spacious but were surprisingly firm over the full seven-hour flight. - No onboard menu for buying extra snacks — only the set meal service. - Headsets were thin and disposable-feeling — noticeably worse than what's offered in business class. ## The Detail The trade-off here is straightforward: Emirates wins on entertainment, service, and the sheer scale of the A380 experience, and the seat is the only real letdown. Book the daytime flight if given the choice — an overnight departure sounds appealing for sleep, but between cabin noise and the seat itself, sleep doesn't come easily, and a daytime flight spent watching films is the more bearable option even with the cost of an extra hotel night on arrival. On price parity with BA, the wider cabin, superior entertainment, and stronger arrivals experience tip the balance to Emirates for this route.
