Cocoon Ocean Villa, Peyia: The Self-Catering Week That Works

A villa on the Paphos side of Cyprus, two minutes from Coral Bay, booked through Airbnb for a two-week summer stay. No sailing this time, no big resort — just a private villa, a car, and a local shop run.

The Verdict

Close to faultless. The villa is private, spacious, and immaculately kept, the host communication was five-star throughout, and the location strikes the right balance between quiet and convenient. We'd book this again without hesitation.

The Scorecard

• Booking & Arrival — 9/10 — Booked through Airbnb for a two-week summer stay, and the listing was an honest account of what turned up. The host was responsive from the first message through to handover, which took the anxiety out of arriving somewhere unstaffed.
• Space & Layout — 9/10 — Three floors, with a master ensuite and two further twin ensuites, plus a spare bedroom that went entirely unused. The distribution is the point: nobody was queueing for a bathroom, and the villa was properly sized for the group rather than merely big.
• Kitchen & Equipment — 8/10 — Fully equipped in the way self-catering rarely is, down to a Nutribullet and a coffee machine, with washing facilities on site. The one weak link is outdoors: the barbecue is a cheap, basic metal stand with a fixed tray that's awkward to clean, and worth replacing if you're renting long term.
• Cleanliness — 10/10 — Weekly cleaners left the place immaculate every time, without exception. This is the only ten we have given on any review, and it was earned.
• Service — 9/10 — The hosts were responsive and helpful throughout, sourcing extras on request without making it a negotiation. For self-catering, host responsiveness is the whole of service, and this was five-star.
• Outdoor Space & Pool — 9/10 — The pool was clean, maintained daily and naturally warm through the August heat, which matters more than it sounds when the alternative is a fortnight of cold plunges. Only the barbecue drags it down.
• Location & Access — 8/10 — Two minutes' drive to Coral Bay and fifteen from anywhere else of real interest, so a hire car is non-negotiable — but that trade-off is what buys the privacy. Cheap taxis cover evenings out. The mark against it is the entrance and access road, which are poorly lit and genuinely hard to find after dark.
• Extras — 9/10 — Air conditioning with no arbitrary timers is the standout, and rarer in rentals than it ought to be. Add good Wi-Fi, full laundry and the small appliances most places don't bother with, and the villa anticipates what a fortnight actually requires rather than meeting a minimum.
• Feel — 9/10 — Private and remote enough to avoid noise and disturbance without losing convenience. Over two weeks, splitting time roughly evenly between cooking in and eating out, it stopped feeling like a rental and started feeling like somewhere we lived.
• Value — 8/10 — Good value for the space and the privacy, particularly measured against a hotel offering the same room count for the same fortnight. Cheap taxis, a large water park an hour away and a smaller one twenty minutes out all add to the package.

Overall: 8.8/10 — Would we book it again? Without hesitation, and it's the highest score we've given. Close to faultless: private, spacious, immaculately kept, with host communication that never faltered. Fix the barbecue and light the access road and there's very little left to say against it.

The Detail

The villa is a fifteen-minute drive from anywhere of real interest, so a hire car is non-negotiable — but that trade-off buys total privacy. Splitting time roughly 50/50 between cooking in and eating out worked well. For eating out, Alexandra's (steak and fish) and Dolce Vita (Italian) on the main high street were standouts, and Oniro — a more upmarket seafront spot reachable by taxi or car — is worth the extra effort. The layout runs over three floors: a ground-floor double without an ensuite (which went unused), a mid-floor master with ensuite, and two further twin rooms with ensuites upstairs — sensible for a group that wants some separation without needing extra villas.
